Facebook, YouTube and Twitter - Social Networking and NAWJ

NAWJ's Media and Public Relations Committee has begun planning development of NAWJ use of current major social networking site services, e.g. YouTube, Facebook. The popularity of social networking has grown from novel use by college students to a necessary plank in outreach by professional media companies, an immediate communication tool for elected officials, and a space for groups to inform each other of thoughts and happenings, major and minor.

NAWJ is committed to finding ways to strengthen our membership into an even more committed and connected group of people in support of mission and each other.

The ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, together with the ABA Young Lawyers Division, will be holding its fourth Women in Law Leadership Academy ("WILL Academy") on April 29-30, 2010, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. NAWJ Past President Fernande Duffly will moderate the panel, "Advice from the Bench" from 4:00 - 5:30PM. A panel of prominent state and federal court judges will discuss the different communication styles of women and men, and include, among other things, a discussion of how women lawyers are perceived in the judicial system. They will provide practical tips and best practices for effective oral argument, opening and closing, examination of witnesses, and communication with the court, opposing counsel, and the jury. The goal of this program will be for attendees to enhance their litigation, negotiation, and appellate advocacy skills.

Overview: Attendees will have a private guided tour of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, followed by a program at the museum that will explore the failure of the judges and those in the legal profession to protect the millions of persons who were left vulnerable to the racist and anti-Semitic ideology of the Nazi regime. A fascinating multi-media historical presentation will examine the judicial response to the key decrees and legislative acts that facilitated the Nazis' ability to carry out their agenda. This will be followed by a guided panel discussion exploring the role of the judiciary in modern society and the need for judicial courage and independence.
