Even if you are not joining the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Reentry Facility excursion, please support the Women in Prison Committee’s book drive created in conjunction with the 2014 Annual Conference. This drive will benefit the library of the California Institution for Women (CIW) in Corona. CIW needs 50 copies of each title - Casting the First Stone by Kimberla Lawson Roby; Bad Childhood- Good Life, by Dr. Laura Schlessinger; and Raw & Naked, But Good, by Moesha McCaffe. The book drive will continue through the end of the year to give every NAWJ member a chance to participate. Click here and take a moment to support this drive. The Warden and Public Information would like to thank NAWJ for its support thus far. Its first book reading was a success, and there is a waiting list of female offenders wanting to sign up for the book club. Let us know if you have purchased a book to be sent to CIW, and we will recognize you on the San Diego Annual Conference web page.

OPTIONAL TOURS | |||||||||||||||||
9:30 AM-11:30 AM | Tour of Las Colinas Detention Center for Women Coordinators: Hon. Pennie McLaughlin and Hon. Margie G. Woods We are fortunate to be among the first to tour Phase I of this newly constructed Reentry Detention Facility. Please join us for an intimate tour of San Diego County’s largest female detention center. The facility is situated on a campus-like setting supporting direct supervision and a “normative environment.” You will learn first-hand how San Diego County addresses the age-old problem of high recidivism by offering training and job skills that women will be able to use in securing employment upon their release. Programs offered to the inmates include certifications in food handling, laundry work, culinary baking, sewing and landscaping. Currently, the sewing program produces the majority of clothing provided to the inmates resulting in a large cost savings to the County. We will travel to and from the facility in one of the Sheriff’s detention buses, so please arrive by 9:15 am for a 9:30 sharp departure. The guided tour will take place in small groups throughout the expansive grounds and include time for questions and answers. Comfortable shoes and early registration are recommended as this event is limited to 30 participants. |

12:00 PM-3:00 PM | Unaccompanied Immigrant Minor Children's Camp Optional Tour Coordinators: Hon. Robert Longstreth and Hon. Tamila E. Ipema Each year, over 85,000 unaccompanied children enter the United States from countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. For 2014, it is expected that close to 60,000 will be detected by immigration authorities. These children are often apprehended at international borders and detained by immigration officials, left feeling hopeless and isolated while awaiting immigration court proceedings. Enter Southwest Key Programs, a national nonprofit organization which operates as the largest provider of services to detained youth. It aims to reunite immigrant children with their families while encouraging the development of personal, social, academic, and vocational skills; working with the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), Southwest Key provides children with opportunities to maximize their potential in the U.S. Conference participants will have the unique opportunity to attend an eye-opening tour of one of two Southwest Key shelters located in San Diego. The rural El Cajon shelter, which tour attendees will have the chance to explore, features a nurturing and therapeutic environment within a three-acre campus for boys ages 12 to 18. Attendees will gain a personal understanding of the Southwest Key shelter mission, and will experience the activities that the camp offers the children, including, outdoor sports, ponies, chickens, roasters, and a fish farm that children assist in caring for, and organic gardening. At the shelter, the youth receive counseling, legal, and medical services, as well as recreation time and an on-site education, all of which tour participants will experience first-hand. |

Woods Opened in 2002, the San Diego Family Justice Center was designed to provide comprehensive support by law enforcement, professionals and civic minded groups for people facing family violence, child abuse, and elder abuse, in one location. Services provided by the Center range from safety and protection from the abuser, to legal help, counseling, food, clothing, spiritual support and medical assistance. The Center is committed to providing victims of domestic violence the help they need to break the cycle of family violence. The Center's mission and structure were recognized as an innovative, model program by President George Bush in 2003, and has been duplicated in other communities nationally and internationally. The National Association of Women Judges is pleased to offer a tour of the Center's facilities and conversations with its staff, which will cover the use of its casual gathering rooms, child play rooms, and professional offices. We know you will learn from the experience how people struggling with family violence can find comfort at the Center and start on their journey of recovery and empowerment.
