Safeguarding Justice: Judicial Independence in a Changing World
The judiciary is navigating unprecedented challenges and pressures — from the expansion of executive power and politicization of judicial selection processes to public skepticism fueled by declining trust and confidence in our institutions. These forces not only test the judiciary’s independence but also challenge its fundamental role as a guardian of democratic principles and the rule of law.
This session will explore the evolving landscape of judicial governance, examining how external pressures and internal vulnerabilities intersect to impact judicial independence and institutional resilience. Through comparative insights, case studies, and interactive dialogue, participants will consider strategies to reinforce judicial integrity, transparency, and public confidence.
Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of the threats facing judicial independence today — and actionable approaches to ensure that courts remain impartial arbiters, capable of upholding justice even in the most turbulent times.
The Judicial Independence Committee of the National Association of Women Judges will introduce its new website and upcoming resources for NAWJ members, which include videos, animations, social media messages, PowerPoint slide decks, printable handouts, and more. By using these resources, NAWJ members and collaborators can message effectively about the importance of preserving an independent judiciary.
