COURTS ON THE FRONTLINE: PROVIDING ACCESS TO JUSTICE WHILE PROTECTING PUBLIC HEALTH DURING A PANDEMIC
On May 13, 2020, using the increasingly popular Zoom platform, NAWJ presented its first webinar,
Courts on the Frontline: Providing Access to Justice While Protecting Public Health During a Pandemic. The panel, moderated by NAWJ Past President Judge Lisa S. Walsh (11th Judicial Circuit of Florida), included Chief Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby (District of Columbia Court of Appeals, Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye (State of California), Chief Justice Susan Christensen (Iowa Supreme Court) and Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack (Michigan Supreme Court). The chief framed their discussion within four themes: 1) what might be the lasting, positives affects from changes in operations brought on due to COVID-19?; 2) how judicial leaders may experience the culture of collaboration toward increasing access to justice with stakeholders; 3) how will we continue to affect and enforce the our constitutions; and 4) how might we lead with empathy to better make policy and rule to implement changes to operate the courts.
