NAWJ SUPPORTS PROPOSED NEW YORK STATE LEGISLATION AMENDING STATE CORRECTION LAW RELATING TO MERIT TIME ELIGIBILITY AND ALLOWANCES FOR INCARCERATED INMATES WHO HAVE DEFENDED THEMSELVES AGAINST THEIR ABUSERS OR HAVE COMMITTED CRIMES AS A RESULT OF THE ABUSE

By letter of June 13, 2006, NAWJ informed the Governor of the State of New York and Members of the New York State Legislature of NAWJ's support for S.5124-B and its companion bill, A.8024-B, that would amend New York State's Correction Law to permit the Department of Correctional Services to grant merit time eligibility and increased merit time allowances to inmates who have defended themselves against their abusers or have committed crimes as a result of the abuse they have suffered, intended to facilitate rehabilitation, and enhance successful community reentry and reintegration among ex-offenders.
