Military Spouses Representing Vets Fellowship Opportunity

Written by National Association of Women Judges|August 29, 2022|News

Veterans Legal Advocacy Group (VetLAG) and MSJDN seek applicants for a two-year fellowship in veterans law at a nonprofit law firm. The fellowship will provide two years of training in agency and federal court litigation of veterans’ disability claims.

VetLAG is dedicated to teaching veterans law, good legal writing, and appellate litigation. The fellowship provides training and oversight as fellows litigate appeals at the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC). Fellows will collaborate with full-time VetLAG attorneys.
After one year, there may be opportunities to work on petitions for extraordinary relief, discharge upgrades, and in front of the Federal Circuit. Fellows who complete the program will be marketable to the VA or any firm practicing veterans law. The field provides many opportunities for attorneys to work remotely and even abroad. Fellows build an extensive and high-quality legal writing portfolio.

Positions begin September 15 to November 1 and run through August 31, 2023. We are looking for two fellows. We expect an average of 35 hours of work per week. As former active duty military members, current reservists, and military spouses ourselves, we understand and will work with you when deployment or PCS affects your family and work schedule.
The first-year salary is $60,000. The second year may include a pay raise depending on performance and inflation. We cannot offer health insurance but do offer participation in our 401k program, which matches all contributions at 60% with no limit and fully vested.
No experience in veterans law or litigation is necessary. The preference is for spouses more likely to stay abroad for two years. We will consider any applicants who are currently abroad and will consider stateside applicants on a limited basis.
