 Greetings NAWJ Members and Friends!
The month of May brings with it a number of terrific programs in which I hope you will have a chance to participate. In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the continued efforts by our members and NAWJ Committees.
• Law Day - Thursday, May 1, 2014, was Law Day, a day on which courts, bar associations, community groups, lawyers, and others across the country will engage in educational activities to enhance public understanding of the role of the legal system and the rule of law in our everyday lives. This year's Law Day theme was American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters. This theme recognizes the important role judicial officers play in promoting voter education and engagement. Please see www.lawday.org for more information. Informed voters are, in turn, critical to sustaining our system of democracy and the rule of law, as well as to increasing civic engagement. For this reason, NAWJ is very pleased to announce that the ABA Judicial Division will partner with us in the IVP.
As you know, this year, NAWJ is focused on its theme of Ensuring Access to Justice for All. This year's Law Day theme is critical to ensuring equal access to justice. NAWJ's Informed Voters Fair Judges Project (IVP) particularly ties in with the theme of Law Day because, in order to ensure equal justice for all, and to protect free and fair courts, the IVP safeguards the ability of each voter to exercise an informed vote in judicial elections. Informed voters, are, in turn, critical to sustaining our system of democracy and the rule of law, as well as to increasing civic engagement. For this reason, NAWJ is very pleased to announce that the ABA Judicial Division will partner with in the IVP.
• International Association of Women Judges Biennial Conference - I will attend the 12th Biennial International Conference in Arusha, Tanzania, May 4-May 8, 2014, hosted by IAWJ President, Justice Eusebia Munuo. Over 70 U.S. judges and attendees are expected to join over 500 women judges from around the world at this important conference. This year's theme is "Justice for All." • Women in Prison Committee - the NAWJ's Women in Prison Committee is represented on a special Bureau of Prisons' taskforce, which reviews the treatment of women in federal prisons around the country. The taskforce will address issues faced by women while in prison. I would particularly like to thank the Women in Prison Committee's Co-Chairs, the Honorable Brenda P. Murray and the Honorable Betty Williams, as well as all of the NAWJ districts around the country, for their continued efforts in their home states to improve the lives of women inmates and their children.
• Equal Justice Conference - President Elect Judge Julie Frantz will represent the NAWJ at the ABA's "Equal Justice Conference" on May 1-3, 2014, in Portland, Oregon. The conference will be hosted by the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service and the National Legal Aid & Public Defender Association. Please support the Women in Prison Committee's book drive created in conjunction with the 2014 Annual Conference. This drive will benefit the library of the California Institution for Women (CIW) in Corona. CIW needs 50 copies of each title - Casting the First Stone by Kimberla Lawson Roby; Bad Childhood- Good Life, by Dr. Laura Schlessinger; and Raw & Naked, But Good, by Moesha McCaffe. Last month, NAWJ's 'IAWJ Biennial Selection Committee' announced the appointment of Judge Jane Spencer Craney (Morgan Superior Court, Indiana), and Senior Judge Carolyn Engel Temin (Court of Common Pleas, Pennsylvania, Retired) as Co-Chairs of IAWJ's 2016 Biennial Conference Planning Committee.
The conference will take place in Washington, D.C from May 26-29, 2016.
Anyone wishing to serve on the IAWJ Biennial Planning Committee may contact Marie Komisar at mkomisar@nawj.org. The Committee will work closely with the Biennial Advisory Council and NAWJ Executive Director Marie Komisar.

Economics Institute for Judges

A handful of spaces are still available in each of the George Mason University Law School's the Law and Economics Center 2014 offerings of the Economics Institute for Judges. The 2014 program dates are as follows: May 4-9, 2014; September 7-12, 2014; and October 12-17, 2014. To date, almost 4,000 sitting federal and state court judges representing all 50 states have attended a LEC judicial education program. In just the last academic year, 483 judges participated.

The Law and Economics Center (LEC) at George Mason University School of Law is a national center for research and education that focuses on the timely and relevant economic analysis of legal and public policy issues confronting our nation. Since its inception in 1974, the Law & Economics Center has played a critical role as a leader in law and economics research and education. to host Legal Career Development Expo

The American Bar Association's Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) will host the first ABA Legal Career Development Expo on May 14, 2014, in the ABA's Washington D.C. office located at 1050 Connecticut Ave., N.W. in the John Marshall Conference Center, 5th floor.
The Expo is designed to reach out to diverse law students and young attorneys and provide them information on ABA services that assist in career development. Attendees will participate in informative workshops; have access to personal one-on-one sessions with career development experts; interact with accomplished, seasoned attorneys; learn how to leverage bar membership to maximize careers, and gain invaluable job search skills from experts.

The 2014 International Association of Women Judges Bi-Annual Conference will take place May 5-9, 2014 in Arusha, Tanzania.
NAWJ 36th Annual Conference will take place October 15-19, 2014 at Westin Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego, California.
2015
NAWJ will hold its 2015 Midyear Meeting and Leadership Conference from April 23-24, 2015 at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.
NAWJ will hold its 37th Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah from October 8-11, 2015.
2016
The International Association of Women Judges Biennial will be hosted in the United States by the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ) in Washington D.C. from May 26-29, 2016.
