APPOINTMENTS AND ELEVATIONS
California

On October 25, 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom appointed 11 Superior Court judges.  NAWJ is particularly thrilled with Governor Newsom’s appointees to the San Diego County Superior Court; all three are NAWJ members:

Judy S. Bae was appointed judge in the San Diego County Superior Court. She had been an associate at Miller, Monson, Peshel, Polacek & Hoshaw since 2005, and at  Horton, Oberrecht, Kirkpatrick & Martha  before that (2002-2005). Kansas

Justice Marla Luckert was named Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court on December 17, 2020 becoming the second woman to serve as Chief Justice in the history of the Kansas Supreme Court. Upon. With the beginning of her term, it will mark the first time in the history of the Kansas that a woman has held the chief justice position on the Supreme Court and the chief judge position on the Court of Appeals. Judge Karen Arnold-Burger has served as Chief Judge of the Kansas Court of Appeals since 2017.  Both Justice Luckert and Judge Arnold Burger are long time members of NAWJ.

On December 16, 2019, Governor Laura Kelly appointed Hon. Evelyn Wilson, Chief Judge for the 3rd Judicial District in Shawnee County, to the Kansas Supreme Court. A year earlier, then Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer appointed Courtney Boehm (now an NAWJ member) of Hillsboro as District Gudge in the 8th District of Geary County. She assumed the vacancy left by the retirement of NAWJ member and former District 10 Director, the Hon. Maritza Segarra.
