Thank you for welcoming me as the 46th President of NAWJ. I am still reeling from our amazing “high energy” Annual Conference in Boston!! Over 200 members were in attendance! I hope you join me in continuing this energy as we move forward together!!
The theme I have chosen for this term is “Building Bridges, Strengthening Ties.” Our association is a testament to the power of unity, resilience, and shared purpose. We are more than a network—we are a force, a family, and a catalyst for change in the judiciary and beyond. I encourage each of you to pause and reflect: What drew you to NAWJ? What inspired you to stay? What’s your NAWJ story? For some, it was a yearning for mentorship, for others, an aspiration to break barriers, or perhaps simply the desire to find a community where your voice and experiences are valued. We all came to NAWJ for different reasons, yet we remain because something profound keeps pulling us back: a sense of belonging, the opportunity to learn from one another, and the commitment to advance justice for all. Each of your stories—stories of perseverance, leadership, and hope—remind us why our association matters and whom it serves.
NAWJ has played a key role in my story. As the first—and only—African American woman to serve on the bench in the state of Alaska, my journey was both isolating and illuminating. While I found pride in breaking new ground, I longed for connection, understanding, and shared experience. NAWJ became that bridge for me. Suddenly, I was not alone; I found a vibrant tapestry of women judges, each bringing their unique backgrounds, their own triumphs and challenges. I was welcomed into a community where the rich diversity was not just welcomed—it was celebrated. NAWJ gave me a place to learn, to lead, and to belong. It gave me a platform to serve and the courage to inspire others. I hope you, too, have found something meaningful here—a mentor, a sisterhood, the empowerment to blaze your own trail.
Building bridges is not just my theme; it is a call to action. We must reach out across generations, across jurisdictions, across backgrounds and perspectives. By strengthening our ties, we fortify the foundation of support and advocacy that NAWJ was built upon. Together, we champion diversity, foster innovation, and create safe spaces for honest dialogue.
As we begin this new chapter together, let us remember our “why.” Let us honor our stories, embrace our differences, and work hand-in-hand to build bridges that will carry NAWJ and our mission forward.
Thank you for entrusting me with this honor, and thank you for your unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and each other. Let’s make this year one of connection, growth, and lasting impact.
The Honorable Pamela Washington
President, National Association of Women Judges
